Uzbekistan actively expanding car-free zones to boost tourist experience
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — As part of efforts to enhance visitor comfort, ensure safe pedestrian access, and provide more meaningful leisure experiences, Uzbekistan is actively developing car-free zones across various regions, spearheaded by the State Tourism Committee.
These pedestrian areas are emerging as a vital element of the country’s tourism infrastructure. Notable examples include zones in the historic center of Bukhara — from the Toki Telpakfurushon architectural complex to the Ark Fortress parking area — and in the city of Khanabad in the Andijan region. In the Fergana region, similar areas have been established near the I. Karimov Palace of Arts in Fergana city, the Eco City Park, Ahmad al-Fergani Park, E. Vakhidov Park in Margilan, Urda Square in Kokand, and along the “Istiklol” tourist street.
In the tourist village of Konigil near Samarkand, a 2.5-kilometer road has been completely closed to motor vehicles, with appropriate signage installed at entry points. Likewise, a 1.5-kilometer stretch of I. Karimov Street — connecting Registan Square with the Shah-i-Zinda ensemble — has been designated exclusively for pedestrians.
This growing practice of creating car-free zones is becoming a key pillar of Uzbekistan’s sustainable tourism development and a hallmark of its evolving urban landscape.
